Guidance from the I Ching: #11 - Peace

When all is right with the world

August 24, 2020

“Peace. The inferior is going. The superior is coming. There will be good fortune and progress. Heaven and earth unite- the image of Peace. A true leader, therefore, can benefit from the harmony between heaven and earth. They are able to organize and interpret cosmic events and, in doing so, help others.”

I consult the I Ching (Book Of Changes) for inspiration at the start of every week. This week’s message is all about harmony and prosperity.

Times of Peace are often related to the events of springtime. Peace is when the enlightened person uses their awareness of the shift in circumstances to cultivate the fertile soil of change and plant the seeds for future success. Peace indicates that conditions are perfect for creating a newly unified vision and implementing progressive plans. The I Ching says that Peace occurs when there is a balance between your instincts and the workings of the Universe. Peace is when the ego is diminished so that your true potential can spring forth.

” When you are at Peace with yourself, you understand your gifts and limitations. You learn to accept your place in the grand scheme of things and realize that there are circumstances that you can control and situations that you can’t.”

Jose Johnson

When you are at Peace with yourself, you understand your gifts and limitations. You learn to accept your place in the grand scheme of things and realize that there are circumstances that you can control and situations that you can’t. You stop wasting time and energy on what you cannot change and focus your resources on the activities that make the most of the opportunities presented to you. Like the words in the Serenity Prayer, you have achieved the “Serenity to accept the things you cannot change, courage to change the things you can, and the wisdom to know the difference.” These are the traits that are at the root of Daoist teachings and Stoic philosophy.

During times of Peace, new insights and ideas can create positive change by replacing the ineffective attitudes and actions of the past. Positive growth will become possible as the wisest leaders quickly move into positions of power. There will be a shift in leadership styles as heart-driven leaders step forward to supplant an outdated authoritarian mode of governance. The I Ching describes the nature of the leaders of this time as being “so magnanimous and progressive that even the most evil elements change for the better.” Leaders of Peace allow their inner virtues to rule their actions. Their decisions are based on what is morally right and not on fear, hatred, or selfish gains. By doing so, they ensure Peace for all.

This time also brings Peace of mind, which creates an atmosphere for success and prosperity. Times of Peace provide you with the perfect opportunity to organize your endeavors. The clarity that Peace offers lends itself to creating systems and implementing procedures that will continue to benefit you, even in hard times. Just like a farmer understands that the key to surviving winter is to start with deliberate planting in the spring, the wise person takes advantage of this time to prepare for the inevitable change in conditions. The habits that you establish now will spell either your success or failure when the seasons inevitably change.

So take advantage of this time of Peace to enrich the lives of others and to bring Peace on Earth through finding Peace within yourself.
